I have been reading Jane Blythe’s Count To Ten series since Book I, One, which is currently free. Her characters are to die for and they take me on a roller coaster ride filled with ups and downs and twists and turns, at times leaving me breathless with anticipation. Eight follows the same characters we have read about for so long; Sofia Xander now runs a center for abused women and children, and all is going well. Until one day, a violent ex-husband tracks down his wife and daughter at Sofia's center and holds eight people hostage to get them back. Sofia has no choice but to kill him, and though everyone says she did the right thing, Sofia can't help but feel like being the one to end a life is a burden much too heavy to bear. And then the situation worsens, when someone starts killing off the hostages, one by one... The plot was very exciting, and I loved how there was a very intense scene very early on which sort of set other events in motion. Although the pacing slowed down a little around the 30% mark, it picked up again quite fast and once I got to the second half, I couldn't put the book down. This book is a little like a whodunnit, but I really loved how the plot kept throwing little twists into the story that made me second guess my prediction (I was wrong in the end, ha). The character development was really interesting in this one, especially because a lot of it focused on Sofia, a character we already know who went through another cataclysmic event. I really liked how the book also focused on her relationship with Ryan, and how even though the main plot of Eight centered around the mystery, there were more domestic internal conflicts around the topic of family that I could relate a lot to. Laura was another character who I really grew to love. She wasn't my favorite when she was first introduced, but her character development is one of the most powerful and persistent that I have ever read. Her screentime was limited in Eight, but just by reading about how people talked about her, Laura had a really strong presence in the book, and she is slowly becoming one of my favorite characters! Lastly, the writing style was, as usual, great. I always love reading the perspective of the antagonist without being told who they are, and this book did a really good job with keeping me on the edge of my seat that way. For any mystery/thriller/suspense lover, I'd recommend this book, but I'd definitely suggest starting all the way from book one to get the full experience!

He finally knows where they are after six months of looking. A man on the edge is a danger to anyone that gets in his way. However, he’s not the only one who will take out anyone who is in the way or may be in the way. Ryan and Sophia Xander have been through their fair share of trouble, danger, and darkness. Now they’re in a good place. They have two beautiful children and a great marriage. Sophia used the property she inherited from her family and some of her inheritance to open The Matilda Rose Women’s and Children’s Center. A safe haven for women and children trying to get out of an abusive household. Sophia runs the Center with her sister in-law Laura Xander who is the psychiatrist, her friend Annabelle Montague runs the children’s programs and day care, and her friend Paige Hood, who is a full-time cop and teaches the self-defense classes for anyone interested in taking them. Ryan is a cop and helps out as needed at the center when he can. Kimberly Ute is a new addition to the center as a live-in nurse. She helped Macey and Elle Staines get away from an abusive husband and father. Macey Staines needs to get away from her husband Deacon, he has become abusive. She might have stayed with him even if he was hitting Macey, but when he lifted a hand to Elle their fifteen-year-old daughter, she could not allow that to happen again. I loved this story. Even though it was violent, had triggers, and not a full-on feel-good story. It was written so well, and that is what I loved about it. The suspense and twists in this story were so intriguing that the pages turning. I was so intrigued to find out who the culprit was that I kind of lost track of time and what was going on around me. I give this book a 5-star review and highly recommend it to readers who like suspense, crime, or stories that keep you on the edge of your seat. This story is a great mix of all as well as a crazy family that is always there for each other, even if they are loud and tend to have their nose in each other’s business.

When Deacon Staines enters the Matilda Rose Women's and Children's Center no one has any idea how far he will go to get his wife, Macey, or daughter, Ella, back. But now the remaining hostages are being killed off and detectives Ryan Xander and his partner Paige must figure out who the killer is before they themselves are killed. This is another great book in this series and I have been enjoying all of the books from start to finish. This book had so many twists and turns that you have a sneaking suspicion about something but then realize that there is something deeper going on. I was so proud of Sofia for doing what had to be done but the damage it did on her was huge! She began pulling away from everyone, specifically Ryan, and it was sad to watch her fall apart. I crossed my fingers that she would be able to recover and get the help that Ryan suggested to her. Ryan and Paige were working so hard at following the clues that they got and yet at times they were almost being led in circles. They had their suspicions about certain individuals yet were never 100% sure. The killer was so cold and calculated and you knew that they would not stop at anything to get what they wanted. I had my guess and I was right but I still needed to know what was behind it all and I was definitely shocked at what was revealed! The end was definitely tense and I was curious to see how it was all going to go and who was going to be able to escape from the killer at the end!! Can't wait for the next book!

Eight was such a wonderful story! I really enjoyed reading it because it pulled in all the main characters that have been a part of this series so far. Also, there was justice for a character that was featured in Seven, so I can sleep better at night, yay, ha ha ha. Despite knowing that there could be some safety issues just due to the nature of the service they offer, no one had ever considered that a hostage situation would come to fruition in such a deadly manner or would have such an impact on all those involved. There were many moving parts in Eight with the emotional impact on Sofia, the fallout from being held hostage, the ongoing investigation into the victims from the previous book, as well as suspicious accidents that were befalling those who were witness to the hostage situation. Every page was packed with action, suspense, or emotional moments. I absolutely adored the strength of this family as they weathered many different type storms in this story. I will say that I wasn’t the biggest fan of how Sofia handled her emotional reaction to her life or death choices but luckily things did turn around for her. Overall, Eight was a fabulous addition to the Count to Ten series and I can’t wait to see what Nine has in store for us!
