I had no idea this was a series, but I saw it at work and took a few minutes to read it. It a cute little kids book about Alan Cumming's two dogs. The focus of the story is of the dogs "following" the humans to Scotland to keep an eye on them. It's not much of a story except for Honey falling in love with a Scottish dog. The biggest appeal for me is that the full page watercolor illustrations remind me of Syd Hoff's children's books (Danny and the Dinosaur series and Sammy the Seal), which I love I had no idea this was a series, but I saw it at work and took a few minutes to read it. There is a looseness of the line and simplicity in the way the faces are drawn.

Although I worried about what might happen to Honey and Leon as they were traveling in their first book, my fears were eased in this one as their two fathers know they are following them and always make sure to keep an eye out on their canine protectors. In this picture book, the dads are off on a vacation to Scotland, and the pups come along, always ready to protect their dads from dangers no matter where they are. But Leon has to shoulder the responsibilities for the family when Honey is distracted by a romance with Coll, a local dog who wines and dines her. It's up to Leon to use his wits to bring the family home when fog makes their path inaccessible. It's all great fun, and Leon is proud that he saved the day. I love how much affection these dogs have for their human companions and seeing a photograph of the real Honey and Leon. I wonder where they'll go next. The illustrations are filled with witty asides and sounds that make the book fun to share aloud.

I enjoyed this funny little book, but realized quickly there is not a lot of actual story to speak of here. The illustrations are fun and were the best part of the story. For the sake of reading aloud, I appreciated the little jokes that adults would get when younger readers would not (the horror of ham in a vegan soup!). Overall, this is a book you can read once or...miss without much guilt.

The story line was hard to follow and had a lot of references that children would not understand. Maybe it wasn’t intended for children?
